Urbanites
(Valparaiso/Chicago) @Urbanites
When you listen to The Years, the debut
studio recording from Urbanites, you're hearing a band
in progress. Beneath the frayed linen cover of a classic
novel or between the scratchy grooves of a worn out 33 &
1/3rd, there's a story that we've all heard some version
of - if not lived through, more times than we'd care to
admit: We expend our lives trying to get to an ideal
that doesn't actually exist. And when we come to
understand this reality, we often find that, what we
truly wanted, was right there - with us the entire time.

Bradley Briggs, Steven Burkholder, DJ
Field and Jeremy Schering had known one another for the
better part of a decade before forming Urbanites. They
met in Valparaiso, Indiana - a community that unifies
the rustic midwest with nearby Chicago, Illinois. The
four began making music by exchanging (destroying, and
restoring) computer files and occasionally passing
around a weathered acoustic guitar. After years of
conversations and individual collaborations, they came
to understand that, when the four of them came together,
it was the kind of band that each of them had always
wanted to be in.
Urbanites' first rehearsal space was
in the grand ballroom of an abandoned mansion, secluded
in the snowy woods of the Indiana countryside. Recording
their first demos, every breath haunted the icy air, as
microphones were set and computers were adapted to wall
outlets - likely wired in the early nineteen hundreds.
The gorgeous orchestrations of Nat King Cole - whirring
from vinyl to speakers in aged disrepair - were likely,
the last sounds to echo through this space. For their
earliest performances, they chose unconventional local
venues, like the massive wooden barn at the County Line
Orchard, or the historic Art Theater, which had been
built during the zenith of motion pictures. In the
following months, their ambitions extended with
performances at storied Chicago venues like Schubas,
Double Door, Beat Kitchen, and Metro. The following
summer, a used (nearly un-insurable) white 15 passenger
van was purchased and the band played their first dates
outside of Chicagoland. Performing in front of
considerably larger audiences at SXSW and Summerfest,
they shared the stage with contemporaries like Tyler
James, and Dear and the Headlights.

Heath
McNease (7Spin Records,
Fantastictown, Georgia)
Ask yourself the question, “If I were an emcee, what
would I rap about?” Your subject matter would probably
cover a broad spectrum of topics that range from the
mundane and trivial to the bizarre and fantastic. If you
were asked to pen a rap song, you would most likely
adhere to the writer’s creed ‘write what you know.’ This
is where hip-hop tends to lose its broad appeal. People
don’t want to listen to music they can’t identify with.
Violence, anger, and disregard are not subjects that
most people want to immerse themselves in. Hip-hop was
not designed to alienate; it was designed to unify.
That’s where Heath McNease enters.
Heath McNease is the antithesis of what you might expect
when you think about hip-hop. He is so far removed from
the exploits of the rap game that some may think his
inclusion in hip-hop is oxymoronic. How can someone
effectively write rap lyrics when their main musical
influences are The Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel?
The answer is by writing what he knows. Heath’s subject
matter on his debut album, The Heath McNease Fanclub
Meets Tonight, reflects the ebb and flow of his everyday
life as an average Joe trying to stay true to himself.
Here’s the truth: he recently graduated with his BFA in
theatre performance, he was the ‘most valuable player’
on his high school tennis team, and one of his most
popular live show songs is about his mom paying his rent
while he was in college. |

Adam Cappa (indie,
Richmond, Indiana) @AdamCappa
Adam's powerful voice teamed with a dynamic style of
worship not only involves teens in an unparalleled
performance, but more importantly leads them into
worship. Adam wishes to keep the mindset that he is not
traveling from place to place performing, but
worshipping in the hopes of creating a generation of
face down worshipers. “I truly believe that when we can
face up to glory of all that God is, we will find
ourselves a generation of face down worshipers.” Adam
hopes that through the songs that God has written on his
heart, that the kingdom can be affected for His Glory.
“These aren’t my songs…Their Gods. I’ve just been
blessed enough to share what God wanted to write on my
heart with thousands of people. I have the best job in
the world. I love music, I love being on stage, I love
traveling and I love communicating with others. I’m so
thankful for what I’m able to do.” |

Into the Light
(Tate Records, Valparaiso, Indiana)
Into the Light, a Valparaiso-based Christian rock band,
came together in the spring of 2004 to provide music for
the Praise Service at First Presbyterian Church. The
band members quickly realized they shared musical
tastes, and a vision for taking their gifts and God’s
message to an even broader audience.
They call their music “Classic Rock with a Christian
Message,” and the record and their live sets reflect
their influences: The Beatles, The Eagles, 70s arena
rock, folk, funk and country. The music features soaring
four-part vocal harmonies, layered guitars punctuated by
sax, flute and keyboards, and a steady-as-a-heartbeat
rhythm section. In addition to their original songs,
they cover a wide variety of traditional and
contemporary praise music.
They have quickly built a local reputation as a band
with a conscience, performing at dozens of benefits for
local missions such as the Spring Valley Homeless
Shelter, the Valparaiso Food Pantry, and, at the
Memorial Opera House with two other praise bands, a
benefit for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. |

Vindicated formed
in the summer of 2003 and officially became a band on
August 1st of that year.
At that time we had a different name; we were
known as Living Proof and had 6 people in the band.
We found that there were other "Living Proofs"
out there and changed our name to Vindicated.
The name seemed to reflect our
musical direction as well; a harder edge than many other
Christian groups in the area.
Through the years, we have pared the
operation down to 4 people-guitar, bass, drums, and
vocals.
Vindicated has played shows throughout Northwest
Indiana, Rockford, Illinois, and several benefit shows.
We perform songs from Third Day, DC Talk, Casting
Crowns, along with several originals.
Vindicated plans on playing shows
throughout the area and wherever else the Lord sends us.
We believe in spreading the Word of God through
music performed at churches, fairs, festivals, and other
means.

Arborknot (Portage)
Arborknot was formed in late 2009 by Garrett Moore and
Stephen Eastridge. After suffering changes in the lineup
and names, Arborknot found themselves a full cast in
early 2010. Featuring Garrett Moore on the guitar and
doing vocals, Andrew Naughton also on the guitar as well
as vocals, Stephen Eastridge at the bass, and Bob Castle
taking seat at the drums, they have all agreed that
saving souls by choice of rock music is their mission.
The band’s name often gets a funny look when first
heard, but when people here that an arbor knot is a knot
used by fisher man to tie the line to the reel. Then,
that in Matthew 4:19 Jesus talks about being fishers of
men and it is the goal of the guys from Arborknot to be
the knot used by Christians when they fish for souls.
The guys bring over 40 years of experience between them
and think their unique style of music combined with
experience will allow them to change the music scene
forever! |
